Seventeen teachers from seven different school communities participated in the Boston Writing Projects 29th annual Invitational Summer Institute on teaching writing in July of 2009 (See the list of teachers and schools here).

Aside from ten different schools in Boston, teachers came from schools in Quincy, Medford, Westwood, Newtonville and Northborough. These teachers spent four days a week for four weeks writing and responding to each others writing as well as participating in activities and workshop presentations from teachers and consultants from previous summer institutes.

In addition, everyone made a formal presentation on some aspect of teaching writing in their own classrooms. This year’s topics ranged from “using artifacts to generate ideas”, to “making transitions”, to “using an email pen pal system to respond to reading”. Also, teachers spent two afternoons a week investigating an issue or problem they have in their own teaching. These mini-research reports were collected and shared at the end of the institute.

The energy in July was intense: draining but enervating at the same time. Teachers left feeling exhausted, but were eager to try out new ideas in their classrooms.
For the school year they have agreed to meet again three times to do some more writing, and share what has been happening in their classrooms.

The next meeting date is Saturday, November 14th.
